Time To Register Your SIM Card

In line with a government directive issued on July 20th last year, all mobile network operators are required to register the identity details of their subscribers. The directive is being implemented through the Communication Commission of Kenya.

Lack of identity and inability to trace transactions has caused a rise in crimes carried out through the mobile phones.

Under the new directive, corporates and individuals will be required to register their SIM cards, while parents will have register on behalf of their children.Subscribers have up to 31 July 2010 to register.

Kenya has a total of 20 million subscribers in Safaricom, Zain, Orange and Yu, but only about 10 million subscribers are registered.

To register your SIM card, you will be required to give your phone number, name, date of birth, gender, postal address, physical address and a photo copy of your National ID.

Mobile operators meanwhile, have raised fears that registration of SIM cards could slow down growth of subscribers and increase the cost of data storage and thus cause a reduction in their revenues.
